Hebrews 1:1-2 - Explained

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

The Bible says in times past God spoke in diverse manners — different ways. Throughout the Old Testament you will see God speak out of a cloud, speak out of a burning bush, and sometimes the second member of the Godhead, the Son of God, will actually come down and speak to a person directly. He will send angels to speak. There are a lot of different ways in the Old Testament that God actually speaks to people.

But the Bible says that in these last days he has spoken unto us by his Son. What it is letting us know is that Jesus Christ is the representation of God the Father. He came not to do his own will but the will of God the Father. And of course the Bible also tells us that Jesus is the Word. Jesus Christ was here, he was resurrected, he was here for 40 days, and then he went back up to heaven. And we have the word of God that was written. The Bible is telling us that the word of God is what we have here today to understand God.

You are not going to have God speak to you out of a cloud. You are not going to have God come down and speak to you face to face. That is not going to occur anymore, because in these last days he has spoken unto us by his Son.

Peter touches on something very similar when he writes about the mount of transfiguration, where Moses and Elijah came down and there was a voice from heaven. He physically witnessed miraculous things — and yet he speaks about having a more sure word of prophecy, referring to the word of God, than even those physical experiences. The word of God is the more sure word of prophecy.

And so the thing is, somebody can have a personal testimony or an experience and say that in a dream their grandfather spoke to them, or that while driving they heard a voice and the Holy Spirit was talking to them. People can have all these testimonies. But the reality is it is the word of God we can trust. A lot of people have very false testimonies, and the reality is you are not going to hear a voice from the clouds today. That is simply not going to take place, because the way God speaks to us now is through his Bible.

A big religion that really needs to hear a message like this is the Pentecostal religion, where people will always have these experiences of God speaking to them directly. You think of famous people like Joseph Prince, who talks about God miraculously showing him things and giving him modern-day revelation on a regular basis. But the Bible is actually being very clear in Hebrews 1:1–2. God does not speak to us like that anymore.

In the past he spoke through the prophets and in various different ways. Now he has spoken unto us by his Son. So if we want to actually speak and talk to God, we pray to God — and God talks back to us through his word.
